Logia St Andrews

In 2017, Logia (later, Logia International) was founded at the University of St Andrews, at St Mary’s College, within the Logos Institute of Analytic and Exegetical Theology. The activities of Logia St Andrews sit within the larger organisation of Logia International, LLC. As the founding institution, the Logos Institute and St Mary’s are a critical flagship for Logia’s initiatives, especially in the Northern Hemisphere. Both Logos and St Mary’s continue to pilot Logia initiatives under the leadership of the Logia co-Directors (Mattie E. Motl and Sydney Allgood).

Some of these initiatives are: a mentoring scheme for St Mary’s students undergraduate women students, supporting student-run book studies on feminist theological works, meeting regularly with St Mary’s postgraduate women students, hosting fireside chats with prestigious women scholars, providing forums for women to share their research, running workshops on women in the academy, and hosting postgraduate conferences.

To check out what has been done since 2017, see below:

Welcome Week

Logia will run welcome events for both undergraduate and postgraduate students in welcome week as a chance to meet the directors, to hear a little about Logia’s aims and activities, and to find out how to be involved during the year.

All Logia events are open to anyone to attend.

Logia Events: Connect and Excel

Historically, two different kinds of events were run by Logia–Logia Connect and Logia Excel. Logia Connect are chances to see excellence by hearing stories of women faculty from St Mary’s and other guest speakers. This will be a chance to build community among women at all levels (UG-PGR) as we listen and learn together. There will be time for discussion and for students to ask questions and engage personally. Logia Excel is for developing excellence: an opportunity for women students, especially from the PGR level, to “pitch a concept” to an open group. Ideally, this would be a time for the PGR presenter to work through a term or concept from her thesis in order to strengthen her project. While only women would be presenters, everyone is encouraged to attend this from any level at St Mary’s.

Book Studies:
Student run books studies to go deeper into a topic.

Homiletics Workshop:

This was a student and faculty partnership to offer a local workshop on preaching.

Fireside Chat:
Short papers are given by women scholars and then attendees are given a chance to engage with her about her research and story.

Mentorship:
Whether formally or informally, the Logia leadership has sought to partner up mentors and mentees to give students of all levels a chance to deepen relationships of encouragement with each other.

Blogia:

Conferences:

For more details of the events that are being hosted or have been hosted (to give more ideas for other institutions to adapt and develop) see the list below:

We have simplified our calendar of events to focus on relational support and encouragement.  We will provide development opportunities, training or resources in a more dynamic and responsive way, as we see how the semester unfolds for everyone.
